Luna’s Journey: A Family Worth The Wait
Written by Jayce Rivera
“ Luna is a beautiful fawn colored pit mix, confident and is wonderful around children as young as 2. She had a fiereness to her yet a gentle and appreciative side. She was grossly overweight when we pulled her and Luna was a trooper during her rescue stay and successfully lost 24lbs! The Brumfield family is the perfect fit for her.” - Andrea Mozolik (P4P Founder & Director)
I first met Luna while working as an adoption counselor at Pima Community Care Center (PACC) back in 2020, and have been privileged to witness her journey of finding her forever home and family. While at PACC, it wasn’t hard to see that she was a sweet, energetic, and wiggly, pit mix but her long history and multiple returns to the shelter for various reasons left Luna with an uncertain future.
Luna’s friendliness combined with her strength and confidence attracted many to her but the dedication she deserved for her success and flourishment in a home often quickly diminished any spark of interest. It was discouraging to watch her bright personality grow dimmer upon each return and to see Luna largely retreat within becoming seemingly ‘guarded’ for continuous upheaval and uncertainty. The urgency for a truly special and committed adopter rose as Luna’s needs to thrive in a home grew and it began to appear as if her chances were becoming slimmer and slimmer.
After being brought back to PACC over six times Luna became classified as an e-listed or short term rescue (STR) dog leading P4P to step in and to welcome her into the rescue. Once a P4P dog, Luna still had a long road ahead as she still required and deserved a patient, diligent, and loving adopter committed to her success. Aside from assessing and meeting her behavioral and training needs, Luna was incredibly overweight causing pain and mobility issues. Despite the hardships of the past and potential obstacles ahead, Luna displayed a flash of the spark still held within as well as the love she was holding on to and ready to give.
In late June of this year the adopters once thought to be an impossibility emerged and completed Luna’s journey towards finding a forever home and family. The Brumfield family opened their home and hearts to meet Luna ‘where she was at’ and it didn’t take long for Luna to begin to see that the Brumfield’s were eternally and lovingly committed to meeting all of her needs, continued growth, and healing.
Luna was officially adopted this past July and the wait for her family couldn’t have been more worth it as she now shines brighter than ever before. The Brumfield family recently sent us an update which couldn’t make all of us at P4P happier or more inspired...
“ The Brumfield family is now complete with the addition of our sweet fur baby Luna. She is a huge snuggle bunny who loves her morning walks, mid-morning trick and outdoor yard surveying sessions- combined with occasional zoomies. And of course she loves ‘after dinner family cuddles’ on the couch. She also loves going ‘bye-bye’ in her daddy’s truck, head and arms hanging out the window with her nose taking in all the smells. When she’s not helping Daddy work on the property, she’s the most supportive work from home cubby mate anyone could ask for. She doesn’t really bark much, ever really, but we are bringing her out of her shell. We’ve heard the most darling “wooooooooo woooo wooo” a few times and it cracks us all up. We are madly in love with our La Luna, The Big KaLUNA, The LUNAnator, LUNApalooza, our loyal protector the LUNAtic, our fantastically fun LUNAtuna. 💖🐾”
Luna’s long and at times completely uncertain road to adoption beautifully represents the reason why we at Passion 4 Paws strive to maintain and improve our commitment to the continuation of our mission. We are dedicated and driven to working towards finding forever homes and families for all of our current and future dogs with the goal of helping create parts of many stories like Luna’s. However the completion of Luna’s journey towards adoption wouldn’t have been possible without the Brumfield family and those who support and have supported Passion 4 Paws and our mission.
Passion 4 Paws currently has many other dogs still waiting to be adopted (and/or fostered) and we rely on the generousity, support, and love from our communities to help make the end of their journey’s to a forever home a reality. 💙
